Frequently Asked Questions About Anxiety Therapy
Can therapy help my teenager with social anxiety?
- Yes. If your teen feels awkward at school, struggles to make friends, worries about what others think, or often feels left out, social anxiety may be getting in the way. Therapy can help them build confidence, feel more comfortable around others, and develop the skills to form friendships and handle social situations with less anxiety.
How do I know if I have anxiety or if I’m just stressed?
- Stress and anxiety can feel very similar, but stress is usually connected to something specific, such as work, finances, relationships, or a major life change. Anxiety is persistent and will continue even when there is no obvious cause or after the stressful situation has passed. Read our aticle: How to Tell the Difference Between Anxiety vs Stress.
What type of therapy works best for ADHD?
- Anxiety can cause both emotional and physical symptoms, including persistent worry, racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, trouble sleeping, muscle tension, a racing heart, shortness of breath, and feeling that something bad is about to happen. Five Weird Physical Symptoms of Anxiety You May Not Realize
When should I consider therapy for anxiety?
- Consider speaking with a therapist when anxiety is difficult to control, keeps returning, causes you to avoid situations, affects sleep or concentration, or begins interfering with work, school, relationships, or everyday life. You don't need to wait until anxiety becomes overwhelming to seek support.
Can anxiety cause physical symptoms?
- Yes. Anxiety activates the body's stress response and can cause physical symptoms such as a pounding heart, shortness of breath, muscle tension, restlessness, difficulty sleeping, and digestive discomfort.
Can therapy help with panic attacks?
- Yes. Therapy can help you better understand panic symptoms and triggers, develop strategies for responding when panic begins, and address the ongoing fear of experiencing another attack. This can be particularly helpful if panic attacks are causing you to avoid certain places, activities, or situations.
