Couples Counselling - Stress during Holiday season

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year? Tips to Help if Your Relationship is Strained Over the Holidays

When this time of year hits, we expect to feel the magic of the season. We often forget about the holiday stress, financial strain, and general overwhelm that can not only consume us but also create additional conflict between partners. Between family expectations, economic pressures, packed schedules, and emotional triggers, it’s no surprise that even the strongest relationships hit rough patches this time of year. If you and your partner are experiencing tension or conflict, you’re far from alone. The good news? With intention and compassion, the holidays can become an opportunity to strengthen your connection. Here are a few ways to help your relationship not only survive the season, but grow because of it.

1. Acknowledge That Stress During the Holidays Is Normal
This time of year brings shifting routines, old family dynamics, money worries, and the pressure to “be happy.” Instead of assuming conflict means something is wrong with your relationship, try recognizing that stress affects both of you. Approach tense moments with curiosity instead of blame. Saying something like, “This time of year is a lot for both of us—how can we support each other?” can create a sense of teamwork instead of opposition.

2. Talk About Expectations Before They Become Arguments
Unspoken expectations are the biggest holiday conflict trap. Should you visit both families? How much should you spend on gifts? What traditions matter most to each of you? These conversations are easier before the tension escalates. Set aside time to talk through what you each hope for this season. Be honest, be specific, and be willing to compromise. Remember: your goal is not to “win”—it’s to understand one another.

3. Create Boundaries That Protect Your Relationship
Holidays often mean being pulled in many directions. If extended family tends to overstep or your calendar is filling up too fast, it’s okay to set limits together. That might mean saying no to a gathering, leaving an event early, or choosing to spend part of the holiday alone as a couple. Boundaries aren’t walls; they’re agreements that help keep your connection safe and strong.

4. Don’t Forget the Small Moments of Affection
During busy seasons, the first things to disappear are usually the little gestures that glue couples together: saying thank you, giving a quick hug, offering a compliment, holding hands. These small expressions matter even more when stress is high. Make a habit of noticing what your partner is doing right, and speak it out loud. Tiny acts of kindness can shift the whole tone of the season.

5. Prioritize Rest—Individually and Together
Fatigue makes everyone more reactive. If you’re fighting more, ask yourself whether either of you is simply exhausted. Protect your sleep, take breaks when you need them, and carve out at least one quiet moment each week to reconnect—whether that’s a walk, a movie night, or even a peaceful half-hour with no phones.

At the end of the day, the holidays are just a season, and your relationship is long-term. We need to remember that we’re on the same team. When conflict arises, pause and ask: “Is what I’m about to say going to bring us closer or push us further apart?” Let your partnership be the priority, not the casualty, of holiday stress.
